Download time depends on two main inputs: how much data has to arrive and how quickly the connection can deliver it. Be careful with bits and bytes. Internet speeds are commonly advertised in megabits per second, while file sizes are usually shown in megabytes or gigabytes. Eight bits make one byte, so treating Mbps as MB/s can make the estimate dramatically too short. The calculator handles the unit conversion for you, but the speed you enter should still reflect the connection that will actually be used. A speed test taken on wired Ethernet may not represent a phone downloading over a weak Wi-Fi signal.

The result is an ideal transfer estimate, not a guarantee. Real downloads can be slower because of protocol overhead, network congestion, Wi-Fi interference, server capacity, routing, browser behavior, security scanning, or another device using the same connection.
